CHALLENGE
Rebranding a record store to highlight it's ethos of music discovery and establish itself in the fast-growing digital music market.
BACKGROUND
Who and Why?
Good Records is a brick and mortar record store based in Dallas, Texas that focused on in-person sales through word of mouth (pre-pandemic). However, the Record Store industry in the last 5 years has been steadily declining at -9.4%. This consumer demand shift has been influenced by a myriad of factors such as online retailers, music streaming services, disc-burning and the economic aftereffects of COVID-19.
Online sales and delivery are becoming primary methods, and Good Records' digital presence has the potential to drive conversion in an engaging and effective manner.
Leaning into a more polished visual identity while still retaining the maximalist, whimsical nature of the physical store can allow the brand to progress into the digital market.
CURRENT WEBSITE
The overall online presence of Good Records is not as immediately recognizable as the physical store. The challenge, as for most businesses, lies in bridging the gap between these two realms. Less negative space and a bolder call to action can guide users through the site with more directional purpose.
LOGO
A contemporary visual interpretation of old-school musical devices.
The initial logo felt slightly buried under many different design elements, making it hard to quickly read. The goal was to create a clean redesign that still retains a subtle whimsical edge.
Good Records' tagline (An Adventure In Listening) inspired the abstract representation of a cassette or an 8-track's magnetic tape curving around its spools as well as sound waves.
REBRAND
A consistent online presence.
WEBSITE
"Choose your own adventure" user experience.
"An Adventure In Listening" frames music listening as not a passive act but rather a discovery of one's tastes and preferences, a revelation about one's identity through a connection to a subculture. An affirmation of their existence and place in the world.
This ethos was the inspiration for re-creating the website into a "choose your own adventure" user experience. The 3D icon links on the homepage represent the products Good Records provides and prompts the user to discover what lies behind them. This emulates the similar experience of sorting through physical record crates.
